Grasshopper Alternative If You Already Pay Twilio (or Telnyx)

Grasshopper is a classic flat virtual PBX for solos and small teams that want a business number with extensions, menus, and call routing without running a carrier account. If you searched for a Grasshopper alternative, the useful fork is whether you want that hosted PBX, or you already finished Twilio or Telnyx (including A2P) and only need software on top. What Grasshopper does well

They keep virtual PBX simple. A business number, call routing, and plan tiers aimed at solos through small teams, without asking you to become a Twilio admin. That is still a coherent product for someone who just wants "a business phone" and does not care which carrier sits underneath.

Public Offer schema figures on 9 September 2026 list True Solo at $14, Solo Plus at $25, and Small Business at $55. Page meta positions Grasshopper as starting at $14 per month billed annually.

If your requirement is a straightforward virtual PBX with published flat plans, Grasshopper is aimed at you. Nothing below pretends otherwise.

Where the gap is

A virtual PBX is a different job from owning the carrier after A2P registration.

Many "Grasshopper alternative" searches come from people who already have Twilio or Telnyx numbers, or who are about to, and want shared inbox, menus, hours, and optionally an AI receptionist without buying another hosted phone brand. Paying for a second PBX when the carrier work is done is the expensive path.

What the other shape looks like

If the job is inbound on numbers you already own, a flat software layer on your carrier looks like this:

One monthly software fee that does not mark up your carrier minutes or messages. Starter is $19.00 per month for two numbers and two seats (Growth $39.00, Commercial $79.00, Enterprise $149.00). Annual billing is ten months for twelve. Line and seat tables live on the pricing page.

Twilio and Telnyx, chosen per number. You keep the carrier bill and compliance registration.

Phone menus, forwarding, voicemail, queues, business hours on the same number that texts.

An optional AI receptionist add-on. It is not included in any core plan, and it is not part of the free trial. AI Starter is $19.99 per month for 100 AI voice minutes and 2,000 AI messages.

Flat virtual PBX, or ownership of the carrier. Those are the two mornings.

Be honest about the maths

True Solo at $14 annual looks cheap, and for a pure hosted PBX buyer it can be. The comparison changes when you already pay Twilio or Telnyx and only needed software. Then Grasshopper is a second phone bill, not a substitute for the carrier work you finished.

What switching actually involves

Ask Grasshopper whether numbers port out cleanly, how long it takes, and what happens to call history if you cancel. Hosted PBX exits are port projects more often than webhook flips.

With BYO Twilio or Telnyx, leaving software usually means repointing webhooks. Numbers stay in your carrier account. Export anything you must keep before you disconnect.

The Grasshopper alternatives that run on your Twilio

If you typed "Grasshopper alternative" because you already pay Twilio, the products worth your time are the ones that connect to that account rather than replace it. Grasshopper cannot: it is a hosted phone system, the number lives with Grasshopper (ported in or issued by them), and there is no way to point it at the Twilio account you have. That is not a flaw in Grasshopper. It is a different product for a different buyer. These four are the same shape as your problem, as of 21 September 2026.

Inflowave is an Instagram-first CRM that adds a Twilio integration: SMS with templates, browser calls over WebRTC, call recording and transcription, voicemail drops, IVR trees, and per-client number mapping for agencies. You can let Inflowave provision and bill Twilio for you, or bring your own Account SID and Auth Token and keep your own billing. Pricing is not published on the integration page (there is a 7-day trial and an agency free plan), and Telnyx is not mentioned. If Instagram DMs are your main channel and the phone is second, it is a sensible fit.

Ringpost launched in August 2026 as a shared phone system for small teams on Twilio: one number the team works together, multiple numbers, IVR, call recording, AI call summaries, and an automatic text back on missed calls, priced pay-as-you-go rather than per seat. That is the closest feature list to Grasshopper on this page. It is a month old, and its launch page does not say whether it connects the Twilio account you already have or provisions its own, so ask before you count on it.

Self-hosting is the developer's Grasshopper alternative. GoSIP is an MIT-licensed bridge in Go that connects two to five SIP desk phones to Twilio for voice, SMS and MMS, with time-based routing, voicemail transcribed by Twilio, hold, transfer and recording; it has no IVR and a handful of GitHub stars. Packages like the twilio-pbx module on npm sit in the same family. You get exactly what you build, you run the server, and nobody answers the support line but you. For a technical owner with a couple of desk phones and a Twilio account, it is free and honest; for anyone else it is a hobby.

TelBuddy is the flat software layer described in the rest of this post: the phone menu, forwarding, business hours, voicemail, queues and shared inbox that Grasshopper sells as a PBX, running on the Twilio or Telnyx numbers you own, from $19 a month with nothing marked up. Of the four it is the only one that also connects a Telnyx account today, and the only one with an optional AI receptionist on the same number. If your customers text as well as call, the shared inbox is the part the phone-first tools on this list do not have.

Choosing between them

Choose Grasshopper if you want a flat virtual PBX, you do not want to run Twilio or Telnyx yourself, and published Solo / Small Business plans match the job.

Choose TelBuddy if you already have (or want) Twilio or Telnyx, you need inbound voice and SMS on those numbers, and you may want an optional AI receptionist without buying another PBX brand.

Choose neither if you only need a personal second line with almost no team features. A consumer second-number app may be enough.
