Twilio AI Voice Agent: A Real Conversation on Your Number

Twilio AI Voice Agent: A Real Conversation on Your Number

A Twilio AI voice agent is a two-way spoken agent that runs on a phone number in your own Twilio account. Callers talk in normal sentences. The agent answers from your business material, can transfer to a human, and can book against a real calendar. It is not a press-1 menu with a nicer voice. If you want the software layer that sits on Twilio (and Telnyx) without porting numbers, start from how it works.

Product and pricing checked 9 September 2026. Twilio usage is billed by Twilio. Verify before you buy.

Voice agent vs phone menu vs DIY Studio

Three different things get sold under similar words.

A phone menu (IVR) waits for digits. Useful for routing. Not a conversation.

A DIY stack (Twilio Studio or Functions plus an LLM API) can become a voice agent. It is a real build: latency, barge-in, transcripts, tools, failure modes, and on-call when it breaks at 9pm.

A Twilio AI voice agent as a product is the conversation layer already built, pointed at numbers you own. You configure knowledge, greetings, and transfer rules in a dashboard instead of shipping code for every change.

If you are choosing among build, hire, or buy, the longer write-up is three ways to add an AI receptionist.

What “on your Twilio number” actually means

Your Account SID stays yours. The number stays in your Twilio project. Usage (minutes, messages, number rent) stays on your Twilio invoice at your rates. Connecting the agent changes where Twilio sends the call webhook for that number. Nothing is ported.

Leaving is the same motion in reverse. Point the webhook somewhere else. The number never moved, so there is no port lottery when you change your mind.

That ownership model is the whole commercial argument. Bundled “AI agent” products that issue you a number are easier on day one and expensive on the day you outgrow them.

What the agent can do on a live call

Capabilities that are verified in product today:

  • Human-like, interruptible speech (barge-in), not a monologue that talks over the caller
  • Knowledge base answers from URLs, PDFs, and notes you attach
  • Smart transfers to a human when rules say so
  • Appointment booking against a connected Google Calendar
  • Instant transcripts and logs in the dashboard

Train what it knows before you care how it sounds. Empty knowledge makes a fluent liar. A tight set of pages beats dumping the whole marketing site into retrieval. See AI knowledge for how that brain is loaded and kept current.

Twilio-only caveat on transfers

When the agent transfers on Twilio, it can ring the whole team at once. On Telnyx, an AI transfer dials one destination at a time. If your pitch deck says “ring everyone,” scope that line to Twilio or say the caveat out loud.

Pricing without the fog

Two bills, always.

Twilio bills carrier usage directly. No per-minute markup from the software layer.

AI voice agent add-on (optional, not in the free trial):

  • AI Starter $19.99/mo: 100 AI voice min, 500 AI messages
  • AI Growth $39.99/mo: 200 min, 1,000 messages
  • AI Business $89.99/mo: 500 min, 2,000 messages
  • AI Business Plus $179.99/mo: 1,000 min, 4,000 messages
  • AI Enterprise $329.99/mo: 2,000 min, 8,000 messages

Annual AI billing is ten months for twelve. Core phone-system plans start at $19.00/mo and do not include the AI add-on. Tables live on pricing.

Who should not buy a voice agent

Skip it if every inbound call is an emergency that needs a human in the first breath. Skip it if most callers are existing customers mid-thread on a messy open issue. They will hate the gate.

Buy it for the calls you already miss: after hours, mid-job, second line busy. Those currently hit voicemail. Voicemail is where leads go to die quietly.

Agent or receptionist?

Search uses both phrases. Same product shape either way: spoken AI on a number you own. “Receptionist” language fits front-desk answering. “Voice agent” language fits people coming from LLM and Twilio builder docs. The dedicated receptionist landing is Twilio AI receptionist if that is the query you actually typed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Twilio AI voice agent?

A two-way spoken AI that answers and acts on calls to a Twilio number you own. It uses your knowledge base, can transfer to humans, and can book calendar appointments. It is sold as an optional add-on on top of a core phone-system plan.

Is this the same as Twilio Autopilot or Studio?

No. Studio and custom LLM wiring are DIY platforms. A productised voice agent is a configured receptionist/agent on your numbers without you owning the speech pipeline.

Do I need a new phone number?

No. Use a number already in your Twilio account. Connecting changes webhook routing for that number only.

Is the AI voice agent in the free trial?

No. The 7-day trial covers monthly core plans. The AI add-on is always excluded because AI minutes cost money when used.

Can it run on Telnyx?

Yes, same software model. Remember the transfer caveat: Telnyx AI transfer is one destination; Twilio can multi-ring.

Skip the Twilio Console entirely

TelBuddy turns everything in this guide into point-and-click settings: IVR menus, forwarding, voicemail, webhooks, and A2P sync, on top of your own Twilio account.
