I Tried to Set Up Business-Hours Call Routing in the Console: Here's Why I Gave Up

I wanted something that felt like it should already exist: calls during the day ring the office, calls after 6pm and on weekends go straight to voicemail. I looked for the setting. There wasn't one.

Why "business hours" isn't automatic

A phone line has no idea what time it is unless something tells it. Left alone, it treats 2pm on a Tuesday exactly the same as 11pm on a Sunday, which means the moment you want different behavior at different times, someone has to define what those times actually are.

What that should feel like

It should feel like filling out a schedule, not writing a program. Hours for each day of the week, an easy way to mark a holiday, and a clear answer for what happens outside those hours: voicemail, a different number, a closed message. Set it once, and it just runs.

Why it's worth getting right

Business hours routing is a small setting with an outsized effect on how it feels to run a business. Set it up once, and every call after 6pm goes exactly where you want, without you doing a thing, without the guilt of a call you didn't hear ring through during dinner.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have different hours on different days, like a half-day Friday? Yes, a real schedule accounts for each day individually, not just one blanket "9 to 5" rule.

Do I need to worry about time zones? No: once your business's hours are set correctly, routing follows your actual local time, not a server somewhere else.

What happens to a call outside business hours? Whatever you decide: straight to voicemail, forwarded elsewhere, or a custom message. It's your call, set once.

Is there a settings-based way to do this, not a custom build? Yes, see our business-hours call routing feature guide for the settings-based version of exactly this.

Skip the Twilio Console entirely

TelBuddy turns everything in this guide into point-and-click settings: IVR menus, forwarding, voicemail, webhooks, and A2P sync, on top of your own Twilio account.
